Silver Wedding Anniversary Gifts: 16 Ideas for a 25th They Will Actually Use
Many silver wedding anniversary gifts are not quite silver. Plenty of modern silver-tone pieces are a light zinc alloy with a microscopic flash coating sealed under lacquer, which is why they bubble and peel within about a year. As one YouTube explainer puts it: "You spend good money on something that's supposed to symbolize endurance and it just disintegrates."
Awkward, then, that we do not sell anything made of silver.
So this guide sends you to people who make genuine silver (items 1 and 2), and suggests a few of our own things that are not silver and do not pretend to be. Every one of these 25th wedding anniversary gifts faces the test we used for ruby: does it get used, or only displayed?
|
Budget |
What it buys |
|
Under £50 |
A silver wedding rose (£29.99 to £42.98), a hallmarked Hersey keepsake from £31 |
|
£50 to £150 |
A Michelin dinner for two (£90), a British umbrella (£110 to £145), a silver birch tree (£122) |
|
£150 to £300 |
Afternoon tea for two (£160), a picnic set (£245) |
|
Pooled, £300 and up |
A cashmere blanket (£390), a balloon flight for two (£399), hallmarked silver coasters (to £500) |
It is written for the adult children as much as the spouse. Sixteen ideas follow.
1. Hallmarked sterling silver, and the tiny lion that proves it
If you are going to honour the theme literally, look for a very small lion.
UK sterling silver is legally 92.5% silver, and a UK-hallmarked piece carries the Lion Passant: a walking lion, tail raised, struck by an Assay Office. That mark alone confirms the 925 standard and Assay testing, and solid silver can be repolished for decades.
Hersey & Son Silversmiths, top two on every version of this search, hallmark to UK regulations, finish in house and make most pieces engravable. Their silver wedding range runs from £31 Lucky Sixpence keepsakes to £500 hallmarked coasters, with free UK shipping over £50.
Choose something that goes on the table: wine coasters, a peppermill, napkin rings, a wee dram cup.

Best for a couple who will set the table with it. Skip if the budget is under £30.
Price: £31 to £500 at Hersey & Son.
2. Vintage silver plate, bought with the five-minute test
Solid silver out of reach? The better answer is often older, not newer.
Vintage EPNS (electroplated nickel silver) has a heavy base under a thick silver layer you can polish for decades. UK plate carries no mandatory hallmark for plating thickness, so check by hand:
-
Feel the weight. Light and flimsy is the biggest warning sign.
-
Find a maker's mark from a reputable name.
-
Treat 'tarnish free' as a red flag. It means a plastic coating.
-
Look for EPNS or EP on the base.
-
Welcome tarnish. It proves the silver is real, and it polishes off.
The catch: it lives at antique and secondhand dealers, so it takes a browse.
Heavy, marked and a little tarnished beats light, shiny and sealed.
Price: varies by dealer; we have not priced a specific piece.
3. Irises, the silver anniversary flower, and what they actually mean
Ask three gift guides for the silver anniversary flower and you get three answers.
Paperlust names the iris, for hope and wisdom. Austen & Blake names the iris, for strength, courage and admiration. English Roses sells a white 'Silver Anniversary Rose' without saying why. Interflora, the UK florist, names the iris: "Irises symbolise wisdom and respect, which feels fitting for this milestone."
So, the iris. The meanings differ in detail; wisdom is the common thread.
Cut irises are a gesture, not a keepsake. Pair them with something that lasts, such as the rose at item 5.
If you want flowers on the day, make them irises, and say why on the card.
Price: a florist's bunch; we have not priced one.

4. One gift from all the children, not four small ones
One Mumsnet poster, planning her parents' 25th, was stuck for ideas "bar the usual chocs and flowers", with afternoon tea and a stay-over already done. Now multiply that by four siblings.
-
Agree the pooled total before anyone shops, then pick one idea.
-
Borrow from that thread: engraved glass, an anniversary rose or clematis, a family photo shoot (item 11), a weekend in Bath or Cambridge (item 8), a National Trust membership (item 9).
The counterweight, from a poster a year past her own 25th: "we didn't expect or want gifts from our adult kids. A card was fine for us". Ask before you over-spend.
More in our wedding gifts for couples guide.
One gift at the pooled figure beats four at a quarter of it.
Pooled: whatever you agree, agreed first.
5. A silver wedding rose that flowers every summer
"I would prefer a silver wedding rose to a silver trinket or photo frame."
Not a retailer talking: a would-be recipient on the same Mumsnet thread.
Two versions rank for these searches. English Roses' Happy Silver Wedding Rose has silvery-pink blooms at £29.99, and Tree2MyDoor's Silver 25th Wedding Anniversary Rose Gift is £42.98.
What the retailers only imply, we will say: a rose gets tended every year, which is the use test passed on hands and knees in the border. It does need a garden, and someone who enjoys one.
Best for parents still in a house with a garden. Skip if they are downsizing.
Price: £29.99 at English Roses, £42.98 at Tree2MyDoor.
6. A cashmere blanket for the sofa they share (not silver, and we will not pretend)
This is not silver. There is a Light Grey, and it is grey. Choose the colour they would like on their sofa.
The Love Stories 100% Cashmere Blanket is £390: yarn spun in Italy, woven in the British Isles, 200cm x 145cm, in a gift box with a cotton storage bag. Six colourways, from Cerise to Toasted Oats. Their two initials, with our Initial Embroidery, add £19.50. We handwrite the card and leave the price off.

Woven, not knitted, so dry clean only. Clean it rarely and air it between uses.
The honest flaw: a small ongoing cost and a trip to the cleaner.
Quick comparison: £390 against a silver photo frame. One gets sat under every evening.
Price: £390 at Heating & Plumbing London, plus £19.50 for initials.
7. A silver birch, the only silver that grows
Of all the silver on this list, only one gets bigger every year.
Tree2MyDoor sells a Large Silver Birch Tree at 1.5m for £122, or a 25th Wedding Anniversary Gift Pack (a sapling, an engraved plaque and a card) for £55. Silver in name and in bark, with nothing to polish.
The honest limit: a birch wants real space. Smaller garden? Try the rose at item 5.
The tree is the one gift still getting bigger at their fiftieth.
Price: £55 for the sapling pack, £122 for a 1.5m tree, at Tree2MyDoor.
8. Two days away, or one very good evening
The house is full. What they are short of is a day with nothing to organise.
A weekend in a UK city, perhaps: Bath and Cambridge were the real suggestions in that Mumsnet thread. Or an experience for two from Virgin Experience Days:
-
£90: three-course dining for two at Michelin-starred Elystan Street, Chelsea.
-
£160: Fortnum & Mason Champagne Afternoon Tea for Two.
-
£399: weekday hot air ballooning with prosecco for two.
The poster in item 4 had already done afternoon tea, so check what they have done lately. Agree a date, or the voucher lives in a drawer.
If the house is full, buy them a day, not a thing.
Price: £90 to £399 for two at Virgin Experience Days; a city weekend varies.
9. A membership they will use all year
A membership gets used again every weekend it is not raining. Item 10 covers the weekends when it is.
The Mumsnet parents' thread suggested one in place of a trinket: National Trust, or a local attraction they already like. One card, a year of days out, nothing to dust, and a natural partner for the picnic set at item 14. Check the current joint rate on the National Trust site; we have not quoted one.
Best for a couple who already spend Sundays in gardens and old houses. Skip if they rarely go out.
Price: the current joint membership rate; check before you buy.
10. A British umbrella, or two, for the walks they take together
Twenty-five years of walks, and one of them always forgets the umbrella.
Our long British Umbrella is £145: solid beechwood shaft, hand-scorched maple crook handle, manually cut canopy, hand-assembled in London. The folding version is £110, auto-open, made and assembled in England.

Buy one, for whoever is always out in it. Two only for a couple who walk together every day, rain or not, such as the dog walk; then a colourway each, say Racing Green/Grey and Marine Blue/Pink. The personal part is the gifting: a handwritten card, the wrap, no price slips.
Best for the one who walks the dog in February. Skip if they both drive everywhere.
Price: £110 folding, £145 long, at Heating & Plumbing London.
11. A family photo shoot, and a frame worth putting it in
The silver photo frame is exactly what our recipient in item 5 ranked below a rose. So why is it here?
Because of what goes in it. The Mumsnet parents' thread suggested a family photo shoot, delivered in a silver frame. New pictures of everyone, 25 years on, are the gift. The frame is packaging that lasts.
If the frame is silver, apply the checks: a Lion Passant (item 1; Hersey stocks photo frames) or heavy, marked EPNS (item 2).
Book the photographer first, buy the frame second.
Price: the photographer's fee, plus a frame from item 1 or 2.
12. A champagne bucket for the toast, and something silver to put in it
The same Mumsnet recipient who wanted a rose had a second request. She would also appreciate "something like silver Patron Tequila". Silver in the glass, not in the cabinet.
That wants somewhere to chill. Our "Happy Go Sparkly" Champagne Bucket is £95, with a Cream or Orange leather strap, and it sits among our most-gifted wedding pieces. It is not silver, and we will not suggest otherwise. It is simply what gets carried out for the toast.
Quick comparison: a silver-plated toasting set gets used once. A bucket comes out again at every birthday after.

Price: £95 at Heating & Plumbing London.
13. A commission: a painting of the church, or a song about their 25 years
What could nobody else give them? Something that exists only because of their story.
Three real commissions for a 25th:
-
A Jersey artist painted St Aubin's Church in acrylic for a couple who had married there 25 years earlier.
-
A miniature of a Silver Y moth, painted for a moth enthusiast: the theme hidden inside a hobby.
-
A bespoke silver wedding song, written from one couple's own timeline, down to the shared jokes.
Commission early. Give the artist the venue, the date and a few shared stories, and agree price and lead time first.
If they have a place or a passion, commission that.
Price: set by the artist; ask before you commit.
14. A picnic set, the pooled family gift they use every summer
Four siblings, one budget, and a gift that must be used rather than admired.
Our Mint Green Picnic Perfect Set is £245 and one of our most-gifted wedding pieces; the Rainbow Picnic Perfect Set is the same price. Split four ways, just over £61 each.
Smaller budget? A pure new wool picnic blanket with a waterproof backing runs £110 to £155 by size, in nineteen patterns. None of it is silver, and it needs no excuse.
Best for siblings splitting four ways. Skip if the couple would never eat outdoors.
Price: £245 for a set, £110 to £155 for the blanket alone, at Heating & Plumbing London.

15. A card that does the arithmetic of 25 years
The cheapest idea here is often the one kept longest. One couple in item 4 wanted nothing more.
One keepsake frame sold for the 25th turns the years into smaller units on its inscription. Do the sum yourself: 25 years is 300 months, about 1,304 weeks and about 9,131 days, depending on how many 29 Februaries fall in the span. Better still, count from their wedding date.
Ours, 'This Is Not A Wedding Card', is £4.75, and we handwrite the card on any order.
Write the numbers, then write the sentence only you could write.
Price: £4.75 for ours, or the price of a pen.
16. The day itself, and the one line that decides the rest
The other fifteen circle this: a date in the diary, the right people in the room, and one thing to open.
-
Under £50: the rose (item 5), irises (item 3) and a card that does the arithmetic (item 15).
-
£50 to £150: a Michelin dinner for two (item 8), an umbrella for the walker (item 10) or the silver birch (item 7).
-
£150 to £300: the picnic set, pooled (item 14).
-
Pooled, above that: hallmarked silver (item 1) or the cashmere blanket (item 6).
Other years in the series: ruby for the 40th, leather for the 3rd and wool for the 7th.
We make nothing silver. We make things for warmth, comfort and quiet joy, and if one fits, start at our gifting page.
FAQ
What is the traditional gift for a 25th wedding anniversary?
Silver. Time magazine traces the custom to medieval and early modern Germany, where a wife who reached 25 years of marriage was crowned with a silver wreath, and with gold at 50. The Old Farmer's Almanac carried it by 1859, Emily Post popularised it in 1922, and the American National Retail Jeweler Association expanded it into the year-by-year list in 1937.
Is there a modern gift for a 25th anniversary?
Silver again. The 25th is one of the few milestones where the traditional and modern lists agree, as both The Knot and Bridebook show. What varies between guides is the form the silver takes (jewellery, homeware or an experience), not the theme. Pick the form, not the metal.
What symbolises 25 years of marriage?
Silver, through the German silver wreath custom: the silberne Hochzeit, or silver wedding, with the goldene Hochzeit, the golden wedding, at 50. The iris is the anniversary flower. For what the iris is said to mean, and why guides disagree, see item 3.
What is the silver anniversary flower?
The iris. Interflora, the UK florist, gives its meaning as wisdom and respect. Paperlust says hope and wisdom; Austen & Blake says strength, courage and admiration. English Roses' white 'Silver Anniversary Rose' is a product name, not a tradition. Wisdom is the common thread, and the iris has UK florist backing.
What do you buy a couple for their 25th wedding anniversary?
Something both of them will use: one pooled gift from the children (item 4), a silver wedding rose (item 5), an experience for two (item 8), or hallmarked silver for the table (item 1). Ask first. In one UK forum thread, a couple a year past their 25th neither expected nor wanted gifts from their adult children. A card was fine.
How can you tell real silver from silver plate?
Look for the Lion Passant, a walking lion struck by a UK Assay Office, which means sterling: 92.5% silver. Plate carries EP or EPNS instead, with no mandatory hallmark for plating thickness. In the hand, weight is the quickest check: light and shiny usually means a thin coat on cheap alloy. See item 2.
